Dear Students, Teachers, and Friends Of The University:
The University, like our world, is undergoing dramatic
changes. The world is learning about the effects of
unrhythmic and imbalanced interchanges; and through
the Message of Walter and Lao Russell we can learn the
changes in consciousness, understanding, and action
that are necessary to harmonize our inner and outer
environments.
The principles the Russells taught and demonstrated
are a beacon for all who will see it. We see the effects
of imbalanced financial visions and actions, and the
results of "mine only" attitudes in the religious,
political, and financial sectors. We all have felt the
effects of a civilization that talks about ethics, peace,
and morality yet somehow just cannot seem to walk the
talk. While it is easy to heap blame and ridicule on
those we see outside of ourselves who we think have
apparently perpetrated these imbalanced and unethical
actions, it can be just as easy to see the imbalance,
point to and live the answer to the problem in balance,
and show compassion for all whom we see living in ignorance
of Self and Balance. We can discover how to do this
through a compassionate attitude towards ourselves and
towards others.
Like the world economy, the University has suffered
financial losses and must reorganize its outreach for
the immediate future within the framework of a much-reduced
budget. As a consequence, USP is functioning with a
reduced staff and for the time being is without a physical
presence to display the books, art works, and other
memorabilia that many of us have taken inspiration from
through the years. These steps have been necessary in
order to insure the survival of the institution and
the insurance that its paramount mission continues;
namely, the propagation of the matchless Message that
the Russells dedicated their lives to presenting to
the world.
This is a vital, challenging, world-wide obligation,
and one from which the University will not shirk. We
have not restricted the vision or limited our goals.
Given the opportunities afforded us by modern communication
techniques in extending the University’s Message
to the world, it is stimulating and invigorating for
us to pay heed to husbanding the resources we have in
order to insure the permanence of our mission. Having
our officers and administrators provide pro bono work
for the University, and deferring the time when a new
public headquarters will provide greater access to the
Russell art works, are small sacrifices indeed when
seen in the context of the absolute necessity of making
the Russells’ Message available to mankind.
This work is too important to be neglected. My own previous
experience as President of the University for eight
years occurred when times were better; but now that
times are more difficult, I can and will help, and sincerely
believe that I have the experience once again to take
the helm. My work as a physician in the alternative
healing arts, Chiropractor, Naturopathic Physician,
and Acupuncturist, gives me some flexibility that I
would not have were I working for a corporation or as
an individual in most other fields. This work also places
me in contact with people who are especially interested
in work reflected in the Russells’ teachings and
the University’s outreach. I have always felt
that promoting the work of Walter and Lao Russell was
a natural extension of my healing work.
I first read The Secret Of Light in 1960, having
been given a copy by my natural healing mentor C. Miles
Martin, who was personally acquainted with Dr. Russell.
In 1974 I traveled with my wife and children to visit
Lao Russell at Swannanoa. Thereafter I revisited the
mountain almost yearly. I was pleased to introduce her
to John Denver, who had been my patient and friend for
many years, when he landed his helicopter on the Palace
grounds, and to countless other people from all walks
of life that were subsequently fascinated with and helped
by the Russell works.
This work has always been an inspiration to me and it
is an honor to be able to in this way again regive to
the work. I encourage all of you to join me in spreading
the work and adding to it in whatever way you feel inspired
to do.
The University has always had a worldwide vision and
dissemination of its message, and this has not changed.
This will be continued without interruption. The vision
found in the Russells’ Message is eternal and
can never be destroyed. Our focus is to make the Russell
works available and to suggest how these can be an inspiration
through which others may enlarge the vision and demonstrate
it in their life actions. Accordingly, we are insuring
that the books and Home Study Course will remain
in print, and we will use all available media to alert
others to this work. Additionally, as we all have done
in the past, we will continue to seek new works that
demonstrate the teachings in new creations and new formats
that arise from the same source of knowing. Some of
the forms manifesting this follow below:
1) This year the University will have a presence at
conferences that focus on spirituality, alternative
medicine, changing consciousness and answers to our
world crisis. My work as a physician in the alternative
healing arts has assisted introducing the Russell materials
to those who are already in close alignment with the
Russell Cosmogony and I expect more to come from it
this year. I will be speaking at the New Earth Expo
in Missoula, Montana, May 24-25 and have a booth display
of the Russell works. We will have a booth/display at
the American Association Of Naturopathic Physicians
conference in August in Portland, Oregon.
2) I have finished a new book on alternative approaches
to treating biological, chemical and nuclear war/terrorist
attacks as well as everyday infections titled Big
Medicine, Health Defense Handbook For War Defense,
Bio, Chem Nuke, And Everyday Infections
and have a web site www.bigmedicine.com
describing this which will be linked with the USP and
other sites. As an example, USP will be linking uniteinkindness.org
whose very image symbolizes this message and reflects
the universal desire for a peaceful and kind world where
we choose universal rights for everyone and institutions
that serve and support this. I am also including an
example of the Unite in Kindness image for you with
this mailing. I invite each of you to send me information
about other work that you are doing and web sites that
are in alignment with USP and the world’s needs
that we might all link together.
3) My own newsletter, titled Big Medicine,
focuses on alternative health and healing from the view
of universal principles and useful practices, and will
be published four times a year. Each issue will feature
some aspect or detailing of the Russell works. This
will be published at my personal expense. Further information
about the newsletter can be found on the Big Medicine
website. If any of you have newsletters that the USP
can have a presence in that might assist your readership,
contact me for how we may work together.
4) Laara Lindo and Yasuhiko Kimura are carrying forward
their work as an effort to further the Twilight Club,
calling it "Vision In Action"; and continuing
publishing at their expense The Cosmic Light
under the new title Vision In Action. The University,
as the fountainhead and source for this rekindling of
the original Twilight Club, anticipates working with
them in this effort in ways that we all may envision
as valuable to the planet. The University will contact
other groups with similar visions as the Twilight Club
in an effort to cooperate with them, inspire them, and
learn from them.
5) J.B. Yount III, Chairman of the Board of the University,
is finishing a comprehensive biography of Lao Russell
entitled Remembered For Love that will be available
by next year. If any of you are contemplating or working
on books or other forms of art that are aligned with
the Russell work, please alert me about it. Later on
in this letter you will find some further information
from J. B.'s upcoming book.
6) I will seek radio and T.V. sources to discuss the
University's work and invite those of you who have access
to or a similar desire to access these to let me know
how I might assist you.
My colleagues, as officers of the University, also include
Attorney Tyler Moore as Secretary-Treasurer; Michael
Hudak, who succeeded Lao Russell as President, now serving
as Vice President; and Attorney J. B. Yount III, who
serves as Chairman of the Board. Senator Melford Okilo
of Nigeria, Laara Lindo, and Yasuhiko Kimura remain
as Board members to assist me as President.
Cindy Strickler and Cindy Lewis assist me with the day-to-day
details of taking and fulfilling book and Home Study
Course orders and maintaining our Waynesboro, Virginia
work sites adjoining Swannanoa. I maintain residence
and practices in Boulder, CO and Hamilton, MT and can
be contacted through the usual University phone numbers
and addresses. Note that the University address (although
new to some of you) is in reality our old original address:
Box 520, Waynesboro, VA 22980, reflecting our continued
presence on Afton Mountain near Waynesboro. The 800
phone number remains the same: 1-800-LOVE, and our regular
office phone/fax number has changed to 540-887-5030.
The
following introduction to Remembered for Love
by J. B. Yount III gives a hint of the richly detailed
account of Lao Russell’s life that awaits the
reader of this inspiring biography. The value of such
an accurate, entertaining and insightful account of
such an extraordinary life can also be the inspiration
to model our own lives in a similar yet unique way.
INTRODUCTION
She was
unusually introspective but prone to find joy in every
experience, born in an English village where her family’s
position made her feel secure until she was orphaned
early and left in the care of a loving but overly
protective older sister. Bright in school, she was
beautiful and athletic, and her seniors and peers
found her delightful company.
As a
young girl she was exposed to the life of the richest
family in the world. She developed a streak of independence,
a determination to succeed, and a highly competitive
spirit. Falling in love with a handsome young advertising
executive, she was fascinated by the potential of
mass media marketing and swiftly conceived a successful
health and beauty business. After they married, he
quit his job to join her in what became a highly profitable
venture with a rapidly expanding sales volume.
Ahead of her lay happiness, heartbreak, and challenge,
but her travel, reading, and spiritual insight enriched
her in ways that far transcended the eventual loss
of her business and much of her fortune. Her strong
character was reflected beyond her physical beauty
in the warmth of her smile, her animation of movement
and the obvious concern she felt for other people.
She had an enchanting personality and an inspiring
presence. She made legions of loyal friends on both
sides of the Atlantic.
She insisted
throughout her lifetime that the role of women be
respected and encouraged equally with that of men.
She believed that balance between the sexes was essential
for world harmony and that hope for the future was
futile indeed unless the modern world allowed women
full and free range of opportunity and expression.
She embraced this conviction in her early years and
lived to realize that her unique perspective and living
philosophy would dramatically Impact both sexes for
generations to come.
She spent
years seeking answers to the ultimate questions of
life and came to understand the immutability of the
love that had motivated Jesus of Nazareth and other
great illuminates of history. In mid-life she met
a genius whose unique scientific perspective explained
the dynamics of creation and life with an irrefutable
simplicity. His ideas were incredibly compatible with
hers. They married and spent the rest of their lives
sharing their Message with the entire world. Their
work lives today.
His story
has often been told, but hers has remained obscure.
He always emphasized her pivotal role in their joint
accomplishments. Without her, the Walter Russell Foundation
and the University of Science and Philosophy would
not have come into being. Without her, the art collection
at Swannanoa would not have been an inspiration to
thousands from around the world for a half-century.
She was a woman whose advanced ideas often broke with
tradition but were as timeless as the rhythms of the
universe.
